Alexander W. Kemp Playground Renovation at Cambridge Common
What’s Happening Now
The Cambridge Historical Commission reviewed the proposed playground design and voted to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness on August 7, 2008. The application materials submitted to the Historical Commission are available for download under “Resources” below. The approved design reflects many of the comments gathered at the public presentations held in June.
Project Overview
Beginning this year, the City will be renovating the “tot lot” playground area at the Cambridge Common. The playground will remain in its current location on the Common, but the space will be redesigned to include all new play features, furniture, landscaping, fences, water play, play surfacing and signage. Only the playground area will be renovated as part of this project, and the rest of the Common will not be affected.
The playground renovation is being funded in part by an Urban Self-Help Grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
A separate project is in the planning stages to renovate the pathways, lighting, benches, and trash receptacles throughout the Common and to plant new trees. A community meeting to continue the discussions on this project is expected to occur in fall 2008.
