Project Background

Father Callanan Playground is located in Neighborhood Ten, on Concord Avenue. The park is adjacent to and behind the John M. Tobin Elementary School and has also been referred to as the Tobin School Playground. Father Callanan Park is used by neighborhood residents and families, as well as the Tobin School community extensively both during and after school hours.

The Community Development Department has held three public meetings (on November 17, 2005, March 30, 2006 and September 28, 2006) to discuss the planned renovation of the Father Callanan Playground at the Tobin School.

The final plan for the renovations to the park is largely based on comments received at the public meetings, as well as public feedback through letters, emails, site visits, telephone conversations, and a park questionnaire.

This park renovation project also involved extensive coordination between The Community Development Department and several other City Departments including: The School Department, The Department of Public Works, The Recreation Division of Human Services, The Electrical Department, and the Disability Commission.

Park Renovation Concept Plan

The planned renovations to Father Callanan Playground includes new features and improvements beyond the current playground site including: the empty paved area behind the school, an underutilized grassy area near the baseball fields, and along the path leading from the School to the current site on Concord Avenue.

The features of the plan are a new 5-12 year-old play structure and swings near the school building, a new separate and enclosed under 5 year-old play area on the nearby section of field (each play area will have its own separate water feature), a new paved play space featuring a full basketball court where the playground currently exist along Concord Avenue, marked paved areas suitable for other hard surface play, two half basketball courts with a shared backstop in the general location of the current basketball court.
