Hey, Taxi! Wait For Me!
by Paul J. Schlaver, Director, Cambridge Consumers' Council
The City of Cambridge is very committed to insuring that all Cambridge citizens have access to taxicab service that is readily available and properly run. The Taxi Discount Coupon Program is just one example of the city's interest in this goal.
The joint effort of the Hackney Division (349-6140), the Council on Aging (349-6220), Commission for Persons With Disabilities (349-4692) and the Consumers' Council (349-6150) has just resulted in a new pamphlet that will give you helpful information and tips to follow if you are a taxi customer in Cambridge. The pamphlet is available by calling any of these four offices.
As a taxi passanger in Cambridge you should receive prompt, courteous service. There are four radio services you can call to obtain a cab. There are many taxi stands throughout the city if you are out shopping and need a cab. Do not hesitate to tell the driver if you need any help entering the cab or with your parcels or if your health requires that you sit in the front seat, need your wheelchair placed in the trunk, or require other assistance.
The Cambridge License Commission, through its Hackney division regulates the taxicab industry in Cambridge. If you feel you have been mistreated by a cab driver or radio service dispatcher, you should call the License Comission to register a complaint. It is very important to be able to give some accurate information about the incident. Either the Taxi Medallion number (on the side or rear of the cab) or license plate number is needed. It would be good if you also knew the name or license number of the driver as posted in the cab. Please note the day, time and location of the trip you took.
The city is also hoping there will soon be wheelchair accessible minivans available in Cambridge as existing in Boston. A committee is working on that project with the taxi owners.
Please call for a Taxi Service Brochure or pick one up at the Cambridge Senior Center or other city office.
