Give But Give Wisely
by Paul J. Schlaver, Director, Cambridge Consumers' Council
The holiday season is here as is also the end of the year and the last chance to impact one's income tax situation for 1996. To the Consumer Council staff, this season calls for renewed consumer education about wise charitable giving.
Attorney General Scott Harshbarger has presented his annual education on charitable fundraising in Massachusetts designed to inform consumers how to, "Give But Give Wisely". The Massachusetts Better Business Bureau works closely with the Attorney General every year to produce consumer information about safe charitable giving.
Consumers should answer three important questions before they write any end-of-the-year holiday donation checks.
1. Who are you giving to?
***Obtain the full name, address and telephone number of the charity. Do not be fooled by names that sound impressive or closely resemble the name of well-known organization. Ask if you are talking to a staff person, volunteer or professional fund-raising company's employee?
2. What will your gift be used for?
***Request a description in writing of the charity's specific programs and services. Ask what portion of the donations will directly support these efforts and how much will go to the fundraising cost and administration.
3. How do they ask for your support?
***Charities of questionable integrity will demand cash, use pressure, and tell you sad stories rather than facts. A reputable charity will answer your questions and send you requested information.
Scam artists do not take a holiday from preying on senior citizens. In fact, the holiday season brings out the worst of them! Your mailbox will soon receive many solicitations with dramatic pictures and descriptions of needy people and causes. Your telephone will ring with many desperate pleas.
The Attorney General's Division of Public Charities (727-2200) can answer your questions about specific charities and registered fund-raisers. The Consumers' Council (349-6150) can offer you general advice and information about wise charitable giving.
