Improved Taxi Service Announced

by Paul J. Schlaver, Director, Cambridge Consumers' Council

Four wheelchair-accessible taxicabs are available on the Cambridge streets for all residents and visitors. These taxicabs serve the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are available in the same way any taxicab can be hired, namely, by telephone, at a cab stand or by hailing one ont the street. You do not need to make an advanced reservation and you will pay the same rate as with any taxicab ride.

The City has awarded these four special cab medallions in a lottery process to people committed to providing this special taxi service. The drivers of these taxis have been trained at the Arthur Santoro Cambridge Taxi School so that they can properly serve elderly and disabled individuals, the priority customers for these taxicabs.

In addition, a new taxi stand has been added directly in front of the new Senior Center at 806 Massachusetts Avenue. If you would like to request one of the accessible taxis, because you use a wheelchair or have a mobility need that makes it difficult to enter a regular sedan-type taxicab, call Ambassador Brattle Taxi at 492-1100, or Cambridge Checker Cab at 497-9000, and tell them that you want one of the accessible cabs. Your Taxi Discount Coupons can be used for a ride in an accessible taxi.

You are eligible to receive these discounts if you are a Cambridge resident 60 years of age or older, or a resident who has a disability. For more information about this program, contact the Cambridge Council on Aging at 349-6220 (voice), or 349-6054 (TTY); or Commission for Persons with Disabilities at 349-4692 (voice), or 349-0235 (TTY).

If you are experiencing any taxicab service problems, you should not hesitate to call the Cambridge License Commission at 349-6140 to voice your complaint. The License Commission regulates the taxi industry in Cambridge and will promptly investigate all complaints.
