Avoiding Exploitation through Education
by Paul J. Schlaver, Director, Cambridge Consumers' Council
The Attorney General of Massachusetts has an important piece of consumer education available to seniors to help them move toward the goal of "avoiding exploitation through education". A 1998 wall calendar is available for pickup at the Cambridge Senior Center at 806 Massachusetts in the Council On Aging Office on the 3rd floor.
The Cambridge Consumers' Council has arranged for these calendars to be available and also continues to provide Cambridge seniors with consumer protection services. The calendars will serve as another educational tool for seniors with helpful advice and information prior to any exploitation attempts.
The calendar has very readable monthly pages with room to write-in your appointments and other noteworthy reminders such as birthdays or other special events. Each page also features a different educational alert about a potential scam or pitfall that may target senior citizens. Here are some of the monthly topics: The One-in-Five Guaranteed Gift; Planning Ahead, Financial Security Scams; and Doctor's Orders, Health scams to watch out for.
You may call the Council on Aging at 349-6220, or the Consumers' Council at: 349-6150 to inquire about obtaining the calendar if you are unable to visit the Senior Center to pick one up.
