Consumer Workshops Will Be Regular Events at the New Senior Center
by Paul J. Schlaver, Director, Cambridge Consumers' Council
The Cambridge Consumers' Council is as excited as everyone else about the New Senior Center now open in Central Square. The Consumers' Council will be a regular provider of services at the Center. In fact, some regularly schedule office hours will be available for seniors to meet one-on-one with Consumers' Council staff to discuss their consumer and offer advice or assistance with an ongoing dispute.
The new Senior Center will also provide the Consumers' Council with a location for many workshop opportunities and other educational presentations. The first such event is scheduled for the Center's first month of operation and all Cambridge seniros are invited to attend!
On Tuesday, November 28, Consumers' Council director Paul Schlaver will present a 16 minute video produced by AARP called, "It's a Wonderful Donation." This video, and the discussion that will follow should offer helpful advice so that any donations you choose to make during the approaching holiday season or in response to the end of-the-year pitches made to you by charities, will really benefit the intended recipients of charitable aid and not just the professional fund raiser. Sad to say, some charitable pitches are simply scams you must be wary of! The video and talk begins at 1:00pm, so "Charitable Giving, Don't Be the Victim" may be helpful for you.
Call the Center at 349-6060 if you wish to eat lunch and tour the new center before the program begins, or if you need transportation information.
In December and early next year the Consumer' Council will conduct other workshops. Some of the upcoming topics include: "Mutual Funds, Understanding the Risks" and also "Scams Against Seniors", focusing on telemarketing and direct mail offers. If you wish to talk to the Consumers' Council staff directly about any consumer rights issue please call 349-6150.
