Y2K ----To Worry or Not to Worry That is the Question!
by Paul J. Schlaver, Director, Cambridge Consumers' Council
On Tuesday September 21, 1999 a public forum will be held at the 806 Massachusetts Avenue Senior Center at 1:00PM. The meeting has been called to provide an opportunity to inform the public about the City's preparedness for the moment when the new Millennium begins at midnight on New Years Eve, December 31, 1999 and the possible impact on the computer-driven mechanisms and systems that might be affected.
The meeting is also an opportunity to advise the citizens of Cambridge about any actions they should take individually, if any, and to warn against false rumors or any scam artists that might be trying to take advantage of any public confusion about Y2K.
The forum will be televised on the City of Cambridge Cable TV channel 1 and periodically rebroadcast for those not able to attend or watch the event on the afternoon of September 21st.
A variety of spokespersons will briefly talk about the following topic areas that might be of interest and concern:
*** City of Cambridge Services
***Banking and Financial Service --billing, payments, ATM's, etc.
***Public Utilities -- gas, electricity, telephone and Cable TV
***Public Safety -- Police, Fire, 911 and rescue services
***Hospitals, Pharmacy and Groceries
***Transportation
The Cambridge Consumers' Council and the License Commission has arranged this meeting in an effort to provide, first of all, to Cambridge seniors with the information needed and the answers to any questions and concerns. The televised public forum approach should also provide for an opportunity for the City to inform all other citizens about Y2K and any valid concerns or action steps that should be taken. If you have any question please call the Consumers' Council at 349-6150.
