 Street and Sidewalk Defect Reporting

Residents are encouraged to call the DPW Street and Sidewalk Defect Reporting line at (617) 349-4854 or e-mail theworks@cambridgema.gov to report any concerns that they have. Please describe the location as detailed as possible (including the address) and note the date and time of call.

The Street Maintenance Division will review and inspect the location, usually within 2 working days. In the case of a sigificant sidewalk displacement, crews will mark out the area with fluorescent paint or cones. Temporary and permanent repairs will be scheduled based on the system described in the City's Sidewalk Inspection and Minor Repair Program.

 Curbcut (Driveway Cut) Information

In order to apply for a curbcut (driveway cut), the property owner must first fill out an Application for Driveway Cuts and Openings, available online at http://www.cambridgema.gov/~Inspect/form10.pdf or at the Inspectional Services Department at 831 Massachusetts Ave or the DPW at 147 Hampshire St.

Once the application is properly filled out it is then:

  1. Submitted back to Inspectional Services. The application is then
  2. Reviewed by Inspectional Services and, if approved, it is then
  3. Sent on to Traffic, Parking and Transportation, the Historical Commission and the Cambridge DPW. Once approved by these City departments, the application
  4. Goes before the City Council for final approval. Once the City Council approves the curbcut, the application is then
  5. Sent back to the DPW for schedule of construction. The full cost of the curbcut must be paid to Public Works before the construction can begin.

A brochure about the curbcut application process from the Community Development Department is also available online at http://www.cambridgema.gov/cdd/ed/pubs/sbys/sbs_curbcut_1998.pdf.
