The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has the most comprehensive system of assistance for veterans of any state in the nation. This benefits system traces its roots back to 1636, when the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony were at war with the Pequot Indians. Pilgrims passed a law which stated that disabled soldiers would be supported by the colony.
This statewide assistance program is administered locally in your city or town. You must contact your local Veterans' Director/Agent for assistance.
Today, the City of Cambridge's Department of Veterans' Services (DVS) serves as an advocate for all veterans and their dependents. The department advises clients as to the availability of services and benefits to which they are entitled to. In addition, DVS provides financial assistance (M.G.L. Chapter 115) to needy veterans, surviving spouses and their dependents. This financial assistance includes monies for food, clothing, shelter, utilities, home supplies, personal needs, insurance, fuel, telephone and transportation, as well as medical, dental, hospital and burial allowances. DVS also processes annuity payments for 100% disabled/blind veterans and Gold Star Parents and Spouses. The department also provides assistance in filing for city tax exemptions and abatements earmarked for veterans or their surviving spouses. In addition, DVS assists veterans in applying for motor vehicle benefits, including veterans license plates and processes Welcome Home Bonus applications for those who have served since 9/11.
DVS also assists veterans in applying for federal VA benefits, such as service connected compensations, non-service connected disability pensions, medical benefits, home loans, educational benefits, death and burial benefits, as well as pension benefits for those veterans in nursing homes or are housebound.
The department coordinates public events on Patriots', Veterans, and Memorial Days, including a Memorial Day Parade. On Memorial Day, over 9000 flags are placed on the graves of veterans interred in Cambridge cemeteries. In addition, DVS coordinates the dedication of streets, squares and parks named after veterans.
