About the Department
Welcome to the Community Development Department web page! The Community Development Department is the chief planning agency for Cambridge. Through a variety of programs and activities, we strive to enhance the physical environment; improve the quality of life for residents, businesses, students, and visitors; and support the diversity of our very special community.
This is a time of great excitement and challenge in Cambridge. We continue to be a magnet for biotechnology, life sciences, and related companies, while also encompassing many unique, intimate, and historic neighborhoods. Our ongoing challenge is to help manage the balance among the needs of neighborhood residents, the business community and our world-class universities.
The Department is organized into five major divisions: Community Planning, Economic Development, Environmental and Transportation Planning, Housing, and Lead-Safe Cambridge. The Department also administers the city’s federal Community Development Block Grant, which funds programs of benefit to people with low and moderate incomes, primarily in the areas of housing and human services.
I hope you will explore our web site for more information on the following activities:
- affordable housing development and first-time homeownership;
- technical assistance to small businesses and commercial districts;
- innovation in methods to promote non-auto travel; and
- creative zoning, land use, urban design and community-based neighborhood planning.
We in Community Development are constantly seeking ways to improve Cambridge as a vibrant place to live, work, and study. Please feel free to contact me at brubenstein@cambridgema.gov to share your thoughts and ideas with us.
- Beth Rubenstein, Assistant City Manager for Community Development
