Putnam Green

625 Putnam Ave

Homeowners Rehab, Inc. (HRI) completed construction of 40 units of affordable rental housing at 625 Putnam Avenue in 2012. The City of Cambridge and the Cambridge Affordable Housing Trust are among the funders for this affordable and sustainable development. The project consists of two buildings on Putnam Avenue and Sidney Street, containing one-, two-, and three-bedroom units.

The property was the site of a vacant lab building and brownfield. HRI purchased the property in 2009. The site has now been transformed into an affordable, sustainable, healthy residential development, enhancing the neighborhood and helping to transform this section of Cambridgeport.

The development is aiming to achieve LEED for HOME Platinum certification for both buildings. It has many green and sustainable features and is designed to reach Energy Star Level II and meet the State’s new Stretch Code for energy efficiency.  Selected features include solar hot water and electricity, energy efficient mechanical systems and building envelope, water-saving plumbing fixtures, sustainable building materials including several with recycled content.

This is the most recent example of sustainable affordable housing HRI has completed in partnership with the City and Affordable Housing Trust.

Construction was completed in April, 2012 and tenants moved in shortly afterward. No further updates will be made to this project page.

The 40 units are in two separate buildings. A four story 34-unit building is on Putnam Avenue, and a six-unit three story building is on Sidney Street. There are 10 one-bedroom units, 20 two-bedroom units, and 10 three-bedroom units, with 28 parking spaces in a below-grade garage. Each building is wood framed and is designed to reflect the unique architectural characteristics of its particular location.
