The Small Business Challenge invites Cambridge small businesses, business associations, and groups of neighborhood businesses to propose projects that will enhance and invigorate their commercial areas and business districts. Following a successful pilot year, the 2018 Small Business Challenge increased funding to enable more robust project proposals that bring together neighborhood business interests around shared goals of improved design, promotion, and business resilience in a commercial area.

The following businesses and business associations have been selected as the 2018 Small Business Challenge grant recipients:

  • The Central Square Business Association will use funding to update an old Blockbuster sign with a new facade that reflects the cultural vibrancy of Central Square.
  • The East Cambridge Business Association will commission local business owners to design creative displays in vacant, first-floor spaces in the district.
  • Practice Space in Inman Square will engage the community in an interactive history of businesses in Inman Square through a postcard campaign and springtime walking tours.

Projects will be implemented by May 2018. To learn more about the Small Business Challenge, visit www.cambridgema.gov/SBC.
