Harvard Street Park Expansion

What's Happening Now

The 238 Broadway site is being incorporated into the existing Harvard Street Park and developed into a new open space for the Cambridge and Area Four community. This open space will include a large multi-use field area, a new playground with an area for water sprinklers, and landscaping and trees around the park edges. The existing tennis court will remain at its current location.

Project Background

From 1998 to 2000, a City Manager-appointed group called the Green Ribbon Open Space Committee looked at the future open space needs of the Cambridge community. They found that the City should consider certain areas, including parts of Area Four, as top priorities for the creation of new open space, in the form of community parks and playgrounds.

In November 1999, the Cambridge City Council voted to approve the use of Cambridge's Open Space Acquisition Fund to acquire the 238 Broadway site, which contained a vacant commercial building. Eight public meetings held in 2001 and 2002 discussed the programming and design of new open space on that site. Design work was completed during 2002.

From 2000 to 2004, the buildings at 238 Broadway served as the temporary home for several City of Cambridge offices, while their permanent office building underwent renovations. The renovations were completed, and the offices moved out of 238 Broadway in February 2004. Demolition and site preparation are occurred in 2005, and construction is currently underway.
