CambridgeWalks

CambridgeWalks is an interagency campaign, coordinated by the Cambridge Public Health Department, to encourage residents of all ages to walk for their health, for the environment, and for the public health and safety benefits of less traffic on our streets. The campaign grew out of the collaborative spirit that created Walk Your Child to School Day in October of 1999; this is now an annual event. Participants are City departments, including the police, community development, the schools, and traffic and parking; university, state, and local health providers, educators, and advocates; and community groups. CambridgeWalks includes people in wheelchairs or using other mobility aids in its activities.

Although there are many positive reasons to walk in Cambridge - environmental and safety benefits of less traffic, creating a more livable city, and an increase in foot traffic to local business - CambridgeWalks specifically focuses on the health benefits of walking. It was formed to increase the number of walkers in the city by:

  • Supporting current walking initiatives
  • Creating new initiatives that encourage walking and physical activity

In May, CambridgeWalks puts on the Hunt for the Golden Shoes. A hundred shoes - spray-painted gold - are hidden through the city in places where people walk. People who find the shoes turn them in for a free pair of walking shoes donated by Saucony, Inc. or New Balance, and are entered into a drawing for the grand prize, a walking shopping spree of Cambridge, with an estimated value of more than $1000. Local merchants donate the grand prize to encourage people to walk and shop in the city. The message of the event is that when you get out and walk you never know what you'll find.
