Affordable Homeownership Programs

The Community Development Department provides a variety of programs and services to assist Cambridge residents buying a first home.

Cambridge First Time Homebuyer Classes and Counseling

The Housing Division offers free education and counseling for first-time homebuyers. The First-Time Homebuyer Workshop is offered regularly throughout the year and consists of four 2-hour sessions designed to assist potential homebuyers in understanding the home buying process. Additional specialized classes are offered as well, including classes in foreign languages, trainings for buyers of multi-family properties, and training for new homeowners.

City Sponsored Homebuyer Programs

The City of Cambridge manages several programs for residents looking to buy a home in Cambridge. The city regularly markets units at a specified affordable price and assists potential buyers purchasing units on the open market. Most ownership properties purchased through City sponsored programs are subject to an affordable housing resale restriction. Available properties are advertised on this web site. To learn about new opportunities, please join the affordable housing mailing list.

Affordable Mortgage Products

There are several mortgage programs available to households purchasing homes in Cambridge including the Massachusetts Housing Partnership Soft Second Loan Program and the MassHousing Municipal Mortgage Program, Take the T Mortgage Program and MassAdvantage Program. These products are offered through several local banks.
