Affordable Rental Apartments

The City of Cambridge, the Cambridge Housing Authority, nonprofit organizations and private developers provide a range of rental housing opportunities throughout the city. Households can find out about affordable rental opportunities in Cambridge several ways:

Housing Division Affordable Housing Mailing List

The Community Development Department Housing Division maintains a mailing list of residents who want to be notified when the City markets affordable units. Please note that the mailing list form is not a housing application. You can also call our housing information line at 617/349-4622 to learn about new housing opportunities.

Private Rental Developments

Private for-profit developers own and manage affordable housing throughout the city. These developments maintain waiting lists of households to notify when vacancies occur. Also, through the Inclusionary Zoning Program the CDD markets affordable rental units for various privately owned and managed developments. Non-Profit Housing Developments

Public Housing and Section 8 Housing

The Cambridge Housing Authority (CHA) operates all of the federal and state public housing developments in Cambridge. These affordable apartments serve very-low, low and moderate-income households, elderly, and disabled individuals. The CHA also operates the Section 8 Program. Advertising Affordable Units

When the City markets an affordable housing unit, local newspapers publish notices (Cambridge Chronicle and Cambridge Tab) and flyers are posted throughout the city. Residents on the affordable housing mailing list who qualify for the unit based on income and household size receive a flyer through the mail. New rental housing opportunities are posted elsewhere on this web site.
