After a Cambridge Police Detective observed a transaction taking place between individuals in Central Square, police engaged in foot pursuits which resulted in the apprehension of two suspects.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on August 19, 2013, a Cambridge Police Detective was conducting plain clothes enforcement when he saw a male whom he believed was concealing a firearm on his person.  After following this male and observing his actions, he witnessed what he believed was a drug and/or firearm transaction taking place.

When the detective identified himself to one of the suspects as a member of the Cambridge Police Department, the male fled on foot through Central Square, running into traffic before being taken to the ground and subdued by the detective and other responding officers.  In his possession was a backpack containing a firearm for which he could not produce a License to Carry and/or Firearms Identification Card.

A second suspect was then spotted and pursued through Central Square by police before being apprehended.

Also recovered was a bag containing 20 grams of marijuana.

“Our streets are now safer due to the excellent work of an observant Cambridge Police Detective and his colleagues,” said Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert C. Haas.  “Running into traffic and risking injury, our officers and detectives are a true example of bravery and dedication.”
