Serious crime in Cambridge in 2013 has experienced a sizable decrease of 18% from the first two quarters of 2012, and when measured against the five-year weighted average for this same time frame, a 16% decline (265 fewer serious crimes than the average) has been recorded. The majority of the decrease from 2012 to 2013 can be attributed to the overall drop in larceny (-14%), with 162 fewer thefts reported when compared with the same time period in 2012.
A detailed analysis of all statistics indicates that there were 254 fewer property crimes recorded in the first six months of 2013, which translates to a 17% decrease when measured against the 2012 statistics. Violent crime has fallen 21% between January 1st and July 1st of 2013 when compared with 2012.
According to the FBI’s Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report, released on June 1st, 2013, the nation experienced a 1.2 percent increase in the number of violent crimes and a 0.8 percent decline in the number of property crimes in 2012 when compared with data from 2011.
