Master Box Regulation

In accordance with MGL Chapter 148 Section 28, auxillarized fire alarm systems (master boxes) are required by the Head of the Fire Department for the following properties:

  • High-rise buildings (structures more than 70ft)
  • Schools (public and private)
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing Homes
  • City Owned Buildings
  • Buildings which incorporate certain hazardous operations (use of flammable or hazardous chemicals, liquids and gases)

Exceptions: Buildings or structures that have full sprinkler and fire alarm protection including listed proprietary monitoring service and 24-hour fire safety response personnel.

Note: Installation of an auxilliarized master box does not waive the fire protection supervison requirements of 780CMR Section 923.0.
