New Building Update - 2/6/08

Sgt. Dan Wagner, who is the field officer in charge of construction on the new police station, recently submitted updated information on the process:

The project is currently on schedule with construction expected to conclude by 6/1/08.  Installation of furniture, fixtures, and equipment will take place from 6/1 through 8/31.  Police personnel will begin to move into the new building shortly after Labor day.

2008 marks the 75th anniversary of the current station located at 5 Western Ave. in Central Square.

The new building will allow for easier public access in many ways.  There will be a new community room on the first floor, which will be used for meetings and other functions.  The Records Unit will be easier to locate in the building, on the first floor adjacent to the public lobby.  There will also be public information kiosks available for use.

Additionally the building will be "green" and is currently on track to achieve a silver LEED certification (click here  for more information on this certification).

As for the current station at 5 Western Ave., The City of Cambridge has not determined what its future use will be.

The new Robert W. Healy Public Safety Facility, which will include a state-of-the-art Police Headquarters and Emergency Communications Center, will be located at 125 Sixth Street (between Bent and Rogers) in East Cambridge. The City had been seeking to site a new Police Headquarters for a number of years and the option to purchase the new five-story shell structure in East Cambridge presented an excellent opportunity to obtain a new building without the expense of new construction in an increasingly volatile construction market. After a series of public outreach meetings by the City Council’s Public Safety Committee and throughout the City by the Cambridge Police Department (CPD) in 2004 and 2005, the decision to purchase was reached and the City Council unanimously voted in support of the purchase on April 11, 2005.
