"Crime Index": The Crime Index is composed of selected offenses used to gauge fluctuations in the overall volume and rate of crime reported to law enforcement. The offenses included are the violent crimes of murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, and the property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft.

In 1997, all index crimes except for murder showed a decrease; some slight, some enormous. Murder, the sole exception, increased from a single incident to two.

The rape total in 1997 was the lowest reported in Cambridge in 25 years.

The robbery total in 1997 was the lowest reported in Cambridge in about 35 years.

The assault total in 1997 was the lowest reported in Cambridge since 1989.

The burglary total in 1997 was the lowest reported in Cambridge in about 35 years.

The larceny total in 1997 was the lowest reported in Cambridge since 1979.

The violent crime total in 1997 was the lowest recorded in Cambridge in 30 years.

The property crime total in 1997 was the lowest recorded in Cambridge in 30 years.
