Total Crime

The total crime index has fallen far over the past 25 years, decreasing 52% from 1975 and 38% from 1990. Two bumps visible at the turn of each decade blemish an otherwise steady downward trend. 2000 reported a mere one percent increase over the lowest reported total crime in over 35 years, 1999’s 4343 crimes.

The combined crimes of murder, rape, robbery, and assault swung upward in the late 1980s—reflective of the nation’s epidemic of gang and drug violence combined with greater reporting of domestic assaults. Just as quickly, however, it sank again to record low numbers at the end of the decade.


 

 

 

 


Total Part I Property Crime

Property Crime

Part I property crimes—burglary, larceny, and auto theft—have fallen 54% since 1975 and 42% since 1990. Burglary and auto theft have produced enormous decreases, but larceny (common theft) has actually increased. In 1975, larceny accounted for only 26% of the property crime total; in 2000, it made up 73%
