Board of Library Trustees Minutes

A regular meeting of the Board of Library Trustees was held on Monday, February 7, 2000 in the Director’s Office of the Main Library. The following members of the Board of Library Trustees were present:

• Ms. Janet Axelrod
• Mr. Andre Mayer
• Mr. James Roosevelt, Jr.
• Ms. Nancy Woods

also present:

• Susan Flannery, Director of Libraries
• Philecia Harris, Assistant Director
• Marilyn Gagalis, Administrative Assistant

The minutes of the January meeting were approved.

Correspondence from Frank, Fred and Bert Good was acknowledged.

Ms. Flannery reported on the progress of planning both a John Good Memorial here at the Main Library as well as the City Council’s plan to dedicate a square in memory of John & Edna Good in the vicinity of St. Peter’s Church. City Council preferred a spring date for this dedication. They will contact the library in the near future with possible dates for this celebration.

Board members discussed plans for a forum on the siting of the Main Library. The purpose of this forum would be to provide the citizens of Cambridge with balanced information on possible sites for the library. An outside moderator would preside over this forum.

Ms. Flannery announced that the O’Neill Branch Library would be moved into the new Fitzgerald School gym by June, 2000. This would enable the contractor to complete the work needed in the library without closing the branch.

Ms. Flannery also announced that the Friends of the Library are planning a "Secret Garden Day" in June. This fundraiser would allow participants to follow a map guiding them through a series of private gardens within this city. More details will follow when the Friends have confirmed their plans.

Ms. Flannery explained to board members that the FY01 budget had been submitted and that she was hoping for increases in the branch programming budgets as well as the children’s department budget.

Nancy Woods announced that the City Council has set a date for February 28, 2000 for a round table discussion on the siting of the Main Library.

The next meeting of the Board of Library Trustees will be on Monday, March 6, 2000 at 7:30 p.m. in the Director’s Office of the Main Library.

There being no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 9:45p.m.
