                    Board of Library Trustees

A regular meeting of the Board of Library Trustees was held on
Monday, February 3, 1997 at 7:30 in the Administration Office, 449
Broadway, Cambridge.

The following members of the board of Library Trustees were
present:
          Mrs. Olive Johnson, Chairperson
          Mr. John A.P. Good, Treasurer
          Ms. Janet Axelrod
          Mr. James Roosevelt, Jr.
          also present:
Susan M. Flannery, Director of Libraries
          Marian Hampton, Assistant Director
          Marilyn Gagalis, Administrative Assistant

A motion to accept the minutes of the November meeting was passed
unanimously.

Correspondence from the Massachusetts Board of Library
Commissioners was noted.

Ms. Flannery reported that she had sent the draft agreement that
was approved by the Board of Trustees to the Cambridge Community
Foundation for their comments. She will keep the Board apprised of
any progress.

Ms. Flannery presented the Trustees with a revised FY98 budget as
submitted to the City Manager. After a brief discussion, the Board
gave Ms. Flannery their unanimous support.

Next on the agenda was a discussion on the first planned event of
the Friends of the Cambridge Public Library. Rita Richmond of the
"Friends" has been working diligently to organize an author
luncheon in April. More details will be announced at the next
Board meeting. Mr. Good volunteered to be the liaison for this
event between the Board and the "Friends."

Ms. Flannery informed Board members of special upcoming events: The
25th Anniversary Black History Program, March 9, 1997 and a Family
Potluck, February 27, 1997 in the Children's Room featuring a
presentation by librarian Daryl Mark on her recent trip to South
Africa.

Board members asked Ms. Flannery if any progress had been made by
the Library 21 Committee. She reported that recommendations are
expected from the Library 21 committee in May, 1997. The Board
continued discussion on recent meetings of this committee and the
issues that have been raised. Although the Board has appointed
Mrs. Johnson as their representative to Library 21, other Board
members have attended past meetings and plan to attend future
meetings.

The next regular meeting will be held on Monday, March 3, 1997 at
7:30 p.m.

There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting was adjourned at 9:45 p.m.
