Cambridge Public Library
                    Board of Library Trustees

A regular meeting of the Board of Library Trustees was held on
Monday, March 4, 1996 at 7:30 p.m. in the Administration Office,
449 Broadway, Cambridge.

The following members of the Board of Library Trustees were
present:
               Mrs. Olive Johnson, Chairperson
               Mr. John A.P. Good, Treasurer
               Mr. Andre Mayer, Secretary
               Ms. Janet Axelrod
               Also present:
               Susan M. Flannery, Director
               Marian Hampton Assistant Director
               Marilyn Gagalis, Administrative Assistant

A motion to accept the minutes of the February meeting was made and
seconded.

Mrs. Johnson congratulated Susan and the library staff for the many
outstanding displays and programs sponsored by the library during
Black History Month.

Susan Flannery reminded the Board that there will be a Steering
Committee meeting on March 6, 1996 at 11:00 at the Main Library and
also the City Council hearing on the library expansion project will
be March 18, 1996 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sullivan Chambers at City
Hall.

In response to local newspaper articles, Mr. Good asked if the roof
repairs to the Collins Branch Library had been reported and also
had we done anything to correct the problem. Ms. Flannery informed
Board Members that she had submitted a request to the Capital
Budget Committee to fund the extensive repairs. Board members
decided to draft a letter to submit to the City Manager requesting
his approval for funding regarding these needed repairs.

Ms. Flannery reported on the recent meeting of the Mid Cambridge
Neighborhood Association and the resolutions made by this
organization regarding the library expansion project.

Ms. Flannery also reported that at the most recent Mid Cambridge
Conservation Commission meeting, a suggestion was made that the
City purchase a replacement piece of open space in mid Cambridge
since some of the open space surrounding the Main Library building
would be changed during the expansion.

The Board unanimously voted to support the library expansion on its
current site and endorse the proposed "J Plan" after "having
studied and considered this issue over a number of years."

The Board also voted to send Andre Mayer to the City Council
hearing to represent the decision and support of this Board. All
Board members agreed that the new library should be a world class
building, the most important building in the city for years to
come.

Ms. Flannery informed the Board that the Rotary Club is celebrating
its 75th anniversary and, in honor of this event, is soliciting
proposals from area agencies for projects that would reflect the
community commitment of the Cambridge Rotary Club. Ms. Flannery
suggested that a proposal for the refurbishing of the Central
Square Branch Library would be appropriate. The Board requested
that Ms. Flannery write such a proposal for their approval.

The next meeting will be Monday, April 1, 1996 at 7:30.

There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting was adjourned at 9:30
