Volunteer Tutor Job Description
Tutors work one-to-one with students providing instruction based on a plan to meet the learners' goals and educational needs, and designing lessons creatively taking into account the learners' interests and skills. Materials may include anthologies of stories and poems, newspapers, forms or other materials encountered in daily life, internet resources, computer software programs and other library resources. Multi-sensory phonics based techniques are encouraged when appropriate. We expect tutors to complete weekly journals of activities and learners' progress, as well as periodic evaluation forms. Communication with the program coordinator is important as well.
Duration: Tutorials meet from September through May with a break during the December holiday season. Our work is most successful when each tutorial is characterized by consistency; therefore, volunteers are asked to commit for the duration of the program year
Hours
In addition to the time spent on tutorials, tutors should expect to spend an additional hour per week for planning and completing tutor journals.
