Tour the Walter J. Sullivan Water Purification Facility
A guided tour will lead you through the stunningly handsome Walter J. Sullivan Water Purification Facility completed in 2001. It features distinctive architecture of bold, repeating arched windows in a two-story brick building, surrounded by well-planned, attractive landscaping. The Water Works treats water from the adjoining Fresh Pond Reservoir, Cambridge's largest open space. The city gets its water from two other reservoirs, Hobbs Brook and Stony Brook, located within the communities of Lexington, Lincoln, Waltham and Weston. After purification in Cambridge, the water is pumped to the finished water Payson Park Reservoir in Belmont. From there it is gravity fed to customers through the city's 180 mile water main transmission and distribution system. Large interior viewing areas reveal the pumps and pipes to treat the water and colored ceramic tile has been used to create large-scale wall murals of the water process flow, some of which are highlighted at night and visible from Fresh Pond Parkway. Art within the building lobby was designed by local artists showing the city's system including landmarks, parks, ponds and the Charles River. This is a prime example of excellent municipal design and is an impressive sight.
