Community Learning Center Quilt Project
A Community Learning Center ESOL class for adults engaged in a quilt making project this year. The quilt, which represents the CLC community, is composed of self-portraits and flags that signify students’ diverse backgrounds. Surrounding their portraits, students have written sentences about their experiences, dreams, and goals.
The completed quilt will be framed and displayed in the new CLC building on Western Ave.
As preparation for the project, students completed an assessment of their artistic, interpersonal, and organizational skills. They learned new vocabulary which they used in various writing assignments. Throughout the project, students used listening and speaking skills as well as ‘soft skills,’ such as being cooperative, having patience, and being supportive of one another. These photos show the class putting on the final touches to prepare the quilt for framing, and the nearly completed project.
The Cambridge Arts Council provided funding for the materials and for the collaborating artist, Clara Wainwright, to work with the class during the fall and winter semesters.
