Summer Food Program
The Cambridge Summer Food Service Program provides free lunch to anyone under age 19 during the summer when school is out. Lunch is served 11:30 – 12:30, Monday thru Friday (weather permitting) at Danehy Park, Hoyt Field, Sennot Park, Greene-Rose Heritage Park and Gold Star Mother’s Park. Parks are staffed by Recreation Workers and the Summer Food Program has a contract with Sidekim Foods of Lynn, to provide balanced, nutritious lunches each day.
In 2011, the Program incorporated First Lady, Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative into the program at our open park sites. Each day, weather permitting, an hour of exercise and movement is conducted before a free nutritious lunch is served to anyone under the age of 19. Each week a major dance or exercise event is being held at one of the sites. We’ve partnered with the Benkadi Drum & Dance Company, of Cambridge, and are offering African dance lessons (with background drumming), and the ever popular Zumba instruction. Under the guidance of Bob Goodwin from our Recreation department, we will also be hosting a Field Day event which will include sack races, jump rope, soccer and hula hooping as well as other popular games that involve movement.
Continuing our collaboration with the Agenda for Children’s Literacy Initiative The Book Bike will again be at Greene-Rose Heritage Park (Mondays), Hoyt Field (Wednesdays), and Gold Star Mother’s Park (Fridays), with FREE books and activities. This year a second Book Bike will be at Danehy Park on Thursdays as well. The Book Bike will arrive at each site at 11:30 A.M. on the scheduled day.
Please join us at our parks throughout the summer and “Let’s Move, Let’s Eat and Let’s Read.”
