Youth Involvement Subcommittee
View YIS 2012-14 Application:
The Youth Involvement Subcommittee (YIS) is the youth civic engagement component of the Cambridge Kids' Council. YIS is comprised of a diverse group of young people ages 14 to 18 and is youth led and adult supported. They receive a stipend and/or credit towards community service graduation requirements.
Each year, the YIS works on projects related to the Kids’ Council’s goals and topics that are of interest to the young people. YIS members plan, receive training, interact with influential community stakeholders, and participate in a variety of discussions and activities. This is an opportunity for youth to share their viewpoints on important issues with the leaders of Cambridge.
Aligned with Kids’ Council’s 2012-13 vision of Family Engagement, the Youth Involvement Subcommittee has dedicated their year to supporting 7th and 8th grade (upper school) students with their transition to high school. Splitting up into two teams (the organizers and creative/researchers), the YIS is planning interactive workshops and events, which will give essential “insider” tips and guidance to upper school students and their families. The content will highlight the importance of the freshman year, ways to get involved and advice on developing positive work habits as well as other information YIS members wish they’d known coming into high school. YIS is hopeful that the guidance and expertise that they will share will give upper school students the resources and support to make high school, and the years after, a huge success.
