The Cambridge Council on Aging (COA) operates under the umbrella of The Department of Human Service Programs within the City of Cambridge. The COA was officially established by ordinance in 1975. The mandate of the COA is to provide programs and services for Cambridge residents age 60 and over. The COA services fall into two major categories: Social Services and Senior Center activities. The COA goal is to evaluate, coordinate, promote and encourage new and existing services and activities intended to enhance or improve the quality of life of older persons in the City.
The COA acts as an information and referral source regarding services, benefits, activities, and programs available to elders. Services include but are not limited to News/ines - the Council on Aging newsletter, Benefits Counseling, Social Services, Substance Abuse Services for Seniors, Housing Assistance Program, Medical Transportation, Shopping Shuttle, home safety programs, free YMCA passes, trash/recycling/snow exemption, discount programs and information and referral assistance.
