The Role of GIS in Cambridge
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer resource that makes map creation and information retrieval efficient and easy. The City of Cambridge uses GIS to create, maintain, and analyze its spatial information. GIS has become an important component for projects in nearly every department of the City. Some examples of available Cambridge GIS data include roads, buildings, tax parcels, water lines, street lights, and aerial photographs.

Interactive GIS Tool for the Public!
There are a number of useful questions about Cambridge that GIS can answer. Would you like to know which library is closest to your house? Wondering how you can get detailed tax information about a parcel? Or perhaps you’re just curious about what different parts of Cambridge look like. This type of information can now be easily accessed through the new Cambridge CityViewer.
The Cambridge CityViewer allows residents and City staff to use a simplified GIS through the internet. In order to start viewing, querying, and creating maps, all you need is an Internet Explorer browser. Each CityViewer link contains different map data in it.
To get started, click on any of the CityViewer links on the right-hand side to search for places in Cambridge.
