Avon Hill Neighborhood Conservation District Boundary Study

Latest:

On August 4, 2005, the Cambridge Historical Commission voted to accept a petition and initiate a study of the boundaries and amendments to the Avon Hill Neighborhood Conservation District, per the procedures of Ch. 2.78, Article III of the city code.  Seven study committee members have been appointed by the City Manager. The city code calls for members to come from the neighborhood and from the membership of the Cambridge Historical Commission. The appointed members are Art Bardige, Theresa Hamacher, Heli Meltsner, Jaqueline Olds, William King, Robert Crocker, Bruce Irving. Please click here for a list of meeting dates and discussion topics.

BACKGROUND:

On August 4, 2005, the Cambridge Historical Commission voted to accept the petitions, ask the City Manager to appoint the study committee with representatives from the NCD Commission and the petitioners, and direct the committee to consider the boundaries and other possible amendments to the order or governance issues and the potential for combination with the Lower Common study area.

During the study period, which can last up to one year, the Avon Hill Neighborhood Conservation District (NCD) Study Committee will hold public meetings. The Committee will keep owners informed about the progress of the study through periodic newsletters, will prepare a preliminary Study Report on the proposed NCD, and will hold hearings and a post card poll on the results of the study before forwarding its report to the Cambridge Historical Commission for a hearing and recommendation on the proposal. If the Historical Commission recommends that the Study Report be forwarded to the City Council for action, any amendments to the NCD order must be approved by a majority vote of the City Council.

Note: The adjacent Lower Common neighborhood is currently undergoing an NCD study.
