CPD Recovers Loaded Firearm During Stop Outside Franklin Street Park

Thanks to assistance from the community and the follow-up from our officers, a large capacity, loaded firearm has been taken off of Cambridge’s streets. Yesterday, at about 5:35 p.m., patrol officers with the Cambridge Police Department responded to the area of Franklin Street. A concerned resident reported two males sitting inside a rental car with New York license plates, who appeared to be involved in a possible drug transaction. Officers were able to quickly locate the vehicle, which was partially blocking the driveway of Franklin Place. When officers arrived, a male was exiting the Franklin Street Park area and entering the driver’s side of the car. While one officer stayed with the driver, another officer located two other males inside the park smoking marijuana. Both acknowledged being associated with the driver and they were questioned.

As the driver was looking to produce identification out of the center console of the car, officers observed multiple bags of marijuana and several bills scattered on the driver’s seat. Due to these observations and those of the concerned resident, the driver exited the vehicle and officers began to perform a (I removed inventory) search of the vehicle. During the search, a red backpack was located in the backseat that was heavier than “just clothes” as described by the passenger, who claimed ownership. Inside the backpack was a jacket that appeared to contain the handle of a black firearm. Officers confirmed this by recovering a loaded black .45 caliber Glock 21 firearm.

It was determined that none of the stopped parties had a Massachusetts License to Possess a Firearm. In addition to the recovery of the firearm, a brown paper bag containing 94 grams of marijuana, another bag holding 135 grams of marijuana in 13 baggies, and an envelope with $492 in cash was recovered and submitted to evidence.

The driver -- Nasir Abdullah, 21, Waltham -- was charged with the Possession of a Class D Drug with Intent to Distribute. The passenger -- Demetrius Woodson, 21, Cambridge – was charged with Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition without an FID Card, Possession of Large Capacity Firearm, and Possession of a Class D Drug with Intent to Distribute.
