June 4: Immigrant Heritage Month Art Exhibits at City Hall | June 4th-30th, 795 Massachusetts Ave.

Stop by City Hall starting June 4th to view two featured art exhibits, by Mario Quiroz-Servellon and the Cambridge Community Learning Center, exploring themes of immigration.

I + You Makes We, Mario Quiroz-Servellon

In a political climate where “othering” is routinely used to dehumanize certain groups, it is even more important to remember that it is our diversity that joins and strengthens us, and ultimately makes Cambridge such a special place to live. These portraits capture everyday folks doing everyday things. Together they reflect the incredible contributions immigrants have made and continue to make to our community.

Welcome, Cambridge Community Learning Center

In the summer of 2008, adult English language learners at the Cambridge Community Learning Center started working on “Welcome” banners to greet students and guests coming to the CLC. During the five-week session, fifteen students in an intermediate level ESOL class designed their welcome panels as they shared their languages, chose the fonts, and selected the fabric to represent colors associated with their countries. The work continued in the fall, with students from eighteen more classes contributing additional languages to welcome everyone to the center. Before you count them, can you guess how many languages are included here?
