Construction is almost completed at Russell Field. Some highlights of this renovation include the construction of a new field house, major improvements to the playing fields, a new tot lot, and a renovated parking lot.

Construction at Russell Field is approximately 95% completed. Finish work will continue into spring 2006. Due to the mild winter, the contractor is currently installing baseball fencing, backstops, and foundations for playground structures

As you may know, the history of this site has made possible soil contamination a concern for neighbors and the City. Prior to undertaking this renovation, the City conducted an extensive environmental assessment of the site in cooperation with the Alewife Neighbors Inc. Four locations with asbestos contaminated soil, one location with other contaminants, and three locations with asbestos debris were identified. The contractor has removed and disposed of the soil at these contaminated locations in accordance with the Cambridge Asbestos Ordinance (the CAO).

Construction began at Russell Field during late May 2005, and will be ongoing until Fall 2005. Work hours for this project are 7 AM to 4 PM.
