The mission of the park maintenance
program is to provide safe, clean, attractive, and useful public
open spaces for the City’s residents and visitors. The
Parks and Forestry Division maintains nearly 100 parks, playgrounds,
plazas, squares, islands, medians, and public building grounds.
Its maintenance personnel are organized into three crews that
are permanently assigned to one of three geographic districts.
District 1 essentially covers East Cambridge and Area 4,
and includes such major facilities as Donnelly Field, Gold
Star Mothers’ Park, Ahern Field, and Sennott Park. (view

District 2 encompasses Mid-Cambridge, Cambridgeport, Riverside,
and the greater Harvard Square area. It features notable parks
like Cambridge Common, Hoyt Field, Riverside Press Park, and
Dana Park. (view

District 3 includes the neighborhoods to the north and west
of Harvard Square. It features Russell Field, Rindge Field,
Raymond Park, and Longfellow Park. It also includes several
open space parcels managed by other City and state agencies.

Each maintenance crew is directed by a Parks District Supervisor,
who serves as the primary contact for all public comment with
respect to parks in that area. The supervisors receive guidance
and support from a Turf and Landscape Manager, who has both
curricular and practical training in turf agronomy and ornamental
horticulture. The Superintendent of Parks and Forestry oversees
both the park maintenance effort, as well as the urban forestry
program.
