Soil
Remediation:
Asbestos containing building
material was found under the
asphalt of the Dickinson Street
parking lot during demolition.
Detailed soil testing ielded
information about the exact
location of asbestos containing
building material, as well as
soils containing lead above
residential standards.
Given this information, and
in consultation with environmental
consultants and the Department
of Environmental Protection,
the City decided to remove all
of the existing fill soil from
the opened areas of the site.
This soil was replaced with
clean material. In an effort
to save the large trees proximate
to Harvard Street, existing
soil around the trees will remain
and a breathable, permeable
barrier will be installed around
the trees to prevent exposure
to the remaining soil.
Utilities:
The Water Department upgraded
the mains and services going
through portions of Dickinson
and Clark streets in advance
of park construction. During
park construction, improvements
were made to the drainage utilities
on these streets, and additional
water and irrigation enhancements
made in the park.
Park Construction:
Park construction involved grading
and earthwork, placing pathways
and foundations, installing
play equipment, water play and
furnishings, and landscaping.
This work was substantially
completed by late 2007.
Street and Sidewalk
Improvements:
While primarily a park project,
this construction includes some
additional surface restoration.
This includes roadway and sidewalk
reconstruction on Dickson Street
and Clark Street (between Dickinson
and Broadway), as well as some
sidewalk reconstruction on Harvard
Street along the edge of the
park. |
