Why is this Project Necessary?

The planning process for the Cambridgeport Roadways Project initially began in the mid-1990s, and was focused on protecting residential neighborhoods from traffic created by increasing levels of commercial development in the eastern part of the city. To learn more about the roadway design, please visit the Community Development Department's website at http://www.cambridgema.gov/~CDD/et/infra/cport/cport.html.

The planned renovation of roadways in the area provided an opportunity to enhance drainage utilities and separate combined sewer systems, which lack sufficient capacity to handle certain rain storms.

What is Being Done to Fix the Problem?

The sewer separation and stormwater management work in Cambridgeport involves increasing the capacity of the stormwater drainage system and elimination of ten common manholes.

These improvements will reduce periodic sewer back ups and overflow of sewage into the Charles River.

Who is Responsible for the Project?

The City of Cambridge’s Community Development Department and the Department of Public Works jointly sponsored the Cambridgeport Roadways & Stormwater Improvements Project.

Since much of the funding for this project will be provided by the Massachusetts Highway Department, they are responsible for monitoring the performance of day-to-day construction activities.

What is the Project Schedule?
Construction for the Cambridgeport Roadways & Stormwater Improvements Project began in August of 2003. While originally scheduled for completion in summer 2005, the project is now scheduled for completion in spring 2006.
