A bridge replacement project located in Weston along the Stony Brook and Hobbs Brook confluence.
The Weston Transfer Station Bridge Replacement project was completed September 2013. No further updates to this project page are anticipated.
Planning for the Weston Bridge Transfer Station began in 2010 after high floods in March damaged the structural integrity of the bridge. Construction began in the summer of 2013 and was completed early September 2013.
After flooding in March 2010, the Town of Weston replaced a small bridge to its heavily used Transfer Station. The bridge crosses the Stony Brook and the roadway leading to it forms the bank of Hobbs Brook, the two major tributaries feeding Cambridge’s water supply reservoirs. The project has benefited water quality and water supply security by pulling the road back and pitching it away from Hobbs Brook, creating a larger opening under the new bridge to reduce flooding, and constructing a combination compensatory flood storage and stormwater treatment basin near the Transfer Station's southern parking lot. Watershed staff made routine inspections to ensure construction phase impacts were minimal and that erosion controls were functioning as intended.

Initial condition of the Weston Transfer Station Bridge and access road. The bridge and roadway are set too low for the high flood levels in the Stony Brook, forcing water to pass over the bridge. Photo taken in the fall of 2008.

Water from Stony Brook passing over the road and joining Hobbs Brook. The flood waters further erode the streambank of Hobbs Brook and degrade the structural stability of the bridge. Photo taken in the fall of 2008.

Silt curtain placed along the streambank prior to construction of the new bridge and road repairs. The curtain tapers the impacts that construction might have on the stream by preventing downstream plumes and isolating suspended sediments from the main channel of the stream. Basin construction next to the Weston Transfer Station parking lot. This basin will intercept stormwater from the parking lot, which will settle sediments and slow water velocity before joining Stony Brook. Photo taken on July 17, 2013.

Slope further armored with temporary straw waddles and gravel to filter out sediments from stormwater during construction before it reaches Stony Brook. Photo taken on July 26, 2013.

Beginning of construction on the bridge. Bypass pipes have been placed to allow Stony Brook to flow through the work zone. The large white sandbags channel Hobbs Brook around the work zone, which will be dewatered for construction. Photo taken on July 19, 2013.

Stabilized construction entrance/exit for sediment transport mitigation. The gravel stones are placed over filter fabric to help remove sediment from construction equipment and vehicles which will reduce sediment transport from the site. Photo taken on July 19, 2013.
