The Water Department uses the laboratory jar test to optimize the treatment process to remove Natural Organic Matter (NOM) and suspended solids from the water. The six-place stirrer (see photo) simulates the mixing and settling conditions of the clarification process in our treatment plant. Jars (beakers) with different chemistry conditions are run side-by-side, and the results compared to an untreated jar. The Jar that gives the best removal is identified and those settings are used in the actual treatment process.
