In 1977 the Cambridge Commission on the Status of Women was established by the City Council as a department of city government to “act as a centralizing force in the City of Cambridge and the community to deal with all women’s issues.”
Its objective is to ensure the equal status of all women and girls in educational, economic, political, health, legal, and social spheres. The Commission’s duties include designing and implementing programs that advance women and girls; developing and recommending policies to all City departments, divisions, and agencies on issues affecting women; initiating, coordinating, and monitoring legislation; responding to incidents of discrimination; and initiating public exhibits and media events in the City.
Members of the Commission are appointed by the City Manager, serve three-year terms, and are responsible for supporting the Executive Director in accomplishing the Commission’s goals.
The Commission is a member of the National Associations of Commissions for Women (NACW), the professional organization for over 220 commissions, providing support, expertise, and serving as their national voice. http://www.nacw.org
