Cambridge Street Tunnel Closure Beginning July 30

DPW logo

This past weekend, crews closed Cambridge Street Tunnel in both directions for roadway paving operations. In order to complete the work, crews will be closing the eastbound side of the tunnel (traveling away from Harvard Square toward Broadway/Cambridge St.) on  Saturday, Aug. 3 at 7 a.m. through Sunday, Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. During this closure, emergency vehicles will be able to access the westbound lanes, but will need to detour when traveling east.

Beginning July 30, crews will begin painting tunnel walls and ceiling on westbound side (traveling towards Harvard Square). The tunnel will be closed weeknights, Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m.-5 a.m. Painting is expected to be completed within three weeks (1 ½ weeks per side).

A separate notification will be sent out once painting begins on the eastbound side. Emergency vehicles will have access to the tunnel in both directions during the weeknight shutdowns.

Cyclists are permitted to travel on the tunnel surface area (the overpass). MBTA bus routes and schedules will be affected, so we are asking the public to check in with the MBTA to view adjusted schedules. Please see image below for detour routes.
