In celebration of George Washington’s birthday, Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site will open for four special tours on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. Tours will begin at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, and 4:00 p.m. These tours will take an in-depth look, using the general’s own writings, at Washington’s experiences and some of the challenges he faced during the nearly 9 months that the house served as the headquarters of the Continental Army. This short time would prove to be of pivotal importance in the development of the Army and its Commander-in-Chief. The tours are limited to 15 people each and are on a first-come-first-served basis.

Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site was home to America’s most popular 19th century poet and scholar, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and his family from 1837-1950. The historic 1759 colonial mansion was also General George Washington’s first major headquarters during the American Revolution. The house and its collections were a gift to the nation from Longfellow’s descendants in 1972. In addition to its rich history, the site offers unique opportunities to explore 19th century literature and arts.
