2003 Cambridge Town Gown Annual Report Data

The major educational institutions in Cambridge play an important role in the City's landscape and economy. On a voluntary basis, Cambridge College, Harvard University, Lesley University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology provide an annual report to the City of Cambridge describing current conditions at their Cambridge facilities. The following information is taken from the 2003 reports provides by these institutions.

1. Harvard figures do not include Extension School students.
2. MIT total includes students housed in dormitories, fraternities, sororities and independent living groups.
3. Affiliate housing refers to housing owned by the institution and available only to members of the academic community; it generally does not include either dormitories or housing available for rent to persons not affiliated with the institution.
4. Lesley University did not report figures for acres of property owned.
5. The Cambridge College facility consist of a single parcel with a mix of tax exempt and taxable uses, all of which is included in the tax exempt figures.
6. Lesley University figures are a clarification from the written report submitted to the City.
7. MIT did not report figures for commercial and residential taxable property.
8. MIT figures include ground leases at 100 Memorial Drive and University Park.
9. Cambridge College student spaces for handicapped students only.
10. Harvard University parking stock floats between employee and student use, per the PTDM Plan approved by the City.
11. City of Cambridge Fiscal Year 02 includes the period from July 1, 2001 through June 30, 2002.  City of Cambridge Fiscal Year 03 includes the period from July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003.
12. MIT figures include real estate taxes paid by lessors for property located at 100 Memorial Drive and University Park.
13. PILOT refers to Payment in Lieu of Taxes.
