Walking in Cambridge
Cambridge is a great city for walkers. It is compact and flat, it is well served by public transportation, and its mix of housing, stores, services, work places and parks means that many destinations are within easy walking distance. Virtually every street has sidewalks, and no City street has a speed limit of more than 30 miles per hour. In 2008, Prevention Magazine and the American Pediatric Association named Cambridge America's most walkable city. There are many reasons to take a walk and find out why:
Walking is good for you. It relieves stress, benefits the heart and lungs, and helps with weight control.
Walking is good for the community. A liveable city is one with neighbors who encounter each other on the sidewalks.
Walking is good for the planet. Every time you choose to walk rather than drive you are choosing not to add pollution to the city's air and not to contribute to the global climate crisis.
When you walk in Cambridge, you don't walk alone. About 26% of Cambridge residents walk to work, the second highest rate in the United States (after New York City) for cities of more than 40,000 residents. Many people find walking one of life's pleasures as well as an efficient way to get around.
