City of Cambridge Official Alert of Online Check Scam 9-18-09

The City of Cambridge has been made aware of an online check scam involving checks fictitiously claiming to be from the City of Cambridge.  These counterfeit checks are being sent to individuals who are posting ads for services and or goods on websites such as Craigslist and other similar websites.  The individuals who are sending the checks will send a fraudulent check for more than the amount of money that is asked for.  The individual will then be asked to wire the balance of the money back to a third party via Western Union or MoneyGram.  Even though the stories are convincing, this is an ongoing scam involving people both in the United States and other countries.  The Cambridge Police Department Electronic Crimes Unit is actively investigating the source of this scam.  Any questions can be directed to Detective Brian O’Connor at 617-349-9307.
