Cambridge GLBT Commission to receive GOAL New England Community Service Award
The Gay Officers Action League of New England (GOAL/NE) will present the Cambridge GLBT Commission with a 2009 Community Service Award at its 13th Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony on Friday, Oct. 30, at 6:30 p.m., at the Sheraton Boston Hotel. The award is being presented to the Cambridge GLBT Commission in recognition and appreciation for its progressive leadership and community support.
GOAL New England is a social and support organization for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel as well as civilian employees of federal, state and local law enforcement and emergency response agencies. GOAL New England also provides comprehensive training for police officers and other criminal justice and fire service professionals in an effort to enhance their knowledge of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community issues and related laws.
The annual awards ceremony is the forum that is used to honor those members of the organization as well as members of the community at-large that have been instrumental in helping to further GOAL New England’s mission and goals.
The Cambridge GLBT Commission was established in 2005 with a primary mission to promote and monitor policies and practices that have a positive effect on the health, welfare and safety of all persons who live, visit or work in the City of Cambridge with regard to sexual orientation and gender identity. One of its projects was to work with the Cambridge Police Department (CPD) on various issues affecting GLBT people. Adding GLBT training to the annual police training was one such thing and the Commission worked with GOAL and the CPD leadership to institute such training on a regular basis. Informal and formal feedback from the training was extremely positive. The Commission is now working with GOAL and the Cambridge Fire Department to add such training for Fire and EMT personnel.
