Harvard Square Improved Night time Parking. Meter Hours Extended to 8 p.m. as of April 5
Once 6 p.m. rolls around in Harvard Square, the meters become free parking until 8 a.m. the next morning. For those who were coming into the square for dinner, the theatre, music, shopping or to just enjoy the atmosphere for awhile, it can be difficult to find a parking spot.
Beginning April 5, the 580 meters in the heart of Harvard Square are going to remain in effect until 8 p.m. [Currently they are only in effect until 6 p.m.] This should make spaces available for people coming into the Square after 6 p.m. There will be no change in the rate which is $1/hour. All the meters affected will have a decal on them notifying users that they are in effect until 8 p.m. This information will also be shown on the parking signs.
Harvard Square businesses have been requesting longer time limits at the meters. Subsequently, the City of Cambridge is going to increase the time limits for 250 of the meters from 1 hour to 2 hours. The most active parking meters in the high visibility areas will not be changed and will remain at 1 hour or 30 minutes on time limit.
